Generating virtual views for automotive systems

E-mail

I know, I haven't published something new on my website or on youtube for quite a long time now. One reason is that I'm currently working on my bachelor thesis. I'm writing a program, which generates a virtual top view on a car out of four fisheye camera images. The software uses OpenGL and GLSL to do the view transformation, so it makes use of GPU acceleration.

I made a small animation in Blender to simulate the four cameras. I use the technique described here to achieve the fisheye effect.

This is a first picture of the output of my algorithm:

I'll upload the whole simulation as a video soon.
DSP-Weuffen is the company I'm currently working for.

Models I used:
Old Woman - Johannes Gietl
BMW M6 - Fred C. Mule jr. 'tyrant monkey'
Nissan 300ZX Fairlady - 'tahseen'
Chrysler 300c - ?
Mailbox - Matthew Muldoon 'mofx'

I will make some new animations, art works or tutorials, when I'm finished with my bachelor thesis. That will be in the middle of november. I plan on experimenting a little more on stereoscopy. And there are so many new features in Blender 2.5 I haven't tried out, yet. So there is definitly some new stuff to come... but unfortunately not anytime soon.

New Movie: The Hickening

E-mail

'The Hickening' is another student project, I made together with 'achti' and 'piPPin'. It actually isn't very new, but it finally found its way to youtube. Our topic was 24 hours and we decided to make a movie about a guy who suffers 24 hours from hiccup. We never really made movies before, so it turned out a little amateurish. Nonetheless I think it's good for a laugh and I don't want to hold it back from you.

You can click on the image to get to the video. Enjoy!

The Project Nion Cup

E-mail

I am a person who often drinks tea in the morning and I thought it would be great to have my own personal cup - a cup with the Project Nion logo on it. But before wasting money on printing on a cup, I wanted to know how this would look like. To cut a long story short: I made such a cup in Blender. And because I wanted to know how it would look like in reality, I used an external unbiased renderer: LuxRender.

I haven't had a lot experience with it. It was damn hard to get a good light setup with an unbiased renderer... just like in reality. I'm still not 100% satisfied with the outcome, but I think it is not bad... and I think I will buy myself such a cup :)

Do you like it?

The Ultimate Nerd Riddle

Update: In order to reach a bigger community, I've uploaded this riddle as a small animation on youtube.

New NBE Episode

E-mail

Finally: here is the third episode of 'Nion's Blender Experiments'. I know I actually promised you growing grass and burning paper, but burning paper turned out to be too complex for explaining it in such a short period of time. Instead I talked about that shiny text effect, which you were able to see in my first demoreel. I was asked about that effect very often, so I thought it would be a good compromise. I even go a step further and will allow you to download the .blend file for the burning paper monkey: Link

You can watch all three episodes here: Link

And I would very much appreciate it, if you participate in the new poll and tell me what you think about the NBE series.
By the way: Thanks a lot for 500 subscriptions on my youtube channel!
